EVERY Teacher SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!!! I am happiest (professionally-speaking) when I am doing these types of assessments and diagnostics on kids. This book is a production of its fourth dimension, and as such, has incredibly incorrect information/beliefs in it. Nosotros know more most how people learn because of the advances made by the neuroscience community, nearly of which disprove Levine'due south behavior that are primarily predicated on his anecdotal experiences.

My offset qualm with reading this book is simply the writing way. Levine'south writing style is both informal - childish, even - and pompous. I couldn't connect with him as an author primarily because the writing manner felt alienating.

My second qualm with this book is the insidious racism injected in some of the paragraphs. In i paragraph, he describes sure popular music that children like to listen to every bit "grammatically and semantically impoverished," as a means of supporting his belief that lyricists no longer have work (a false narrative). Read: he's talking down to music primarily produced by black folks.

My 3rd qualm was the fact that, in his stance, children should exist assessed for their strengths and challenges and have their strengths bolstered while their challenges just "addressed". This medical-model way diagnostic process disgusted me, quite bluntly, as I believe in Dweck'south growth mindset. I practice not believe that people are one-dimensional with uncomplicated-to-categorize strengths and weaknesses. I believe that people are on a spectrum of expertise when it comes to specific skills and knowledge and that anyone tin build upon their knowledge and practice skills until they are mastered.

I could continue going with my qualms, merely you go the point. I couldn't finish this volume to save my life because reading information technology was so stressful and uncomfortable because of how outdated it was and how it wasn't supported via empirical evidence.

This makes me think of the old slogan - a mind is a terrible matter to waste. A second quote from parents most their boyfriend who succeeded after much difficulty in schoolhouse- " Seeing how proud he is tells me how pained he was."
The premise for all the neurological systems later elaborated is: identify students' strengths to fight their weaknesses and to allow them know that sometimes their brain functions can't keep up with the demands of schoolhouse. Assessment can give agreement (identifying a difficulty with working memory, attentiveness, problem-solving, etc). This leads to learning how to adapt and cope and grow stronger and as well demand to place strengths. "Insight is liberating -and forgiving." Levine's inquiry and expertise have come from students who have parents and teachers advocating for them and a big part of instruction and parenting is helping children make it through times of feeling inadequate. He emphasizes that kids' minds come into their ain at their own pace and that succeeding at schoolhouse does not mean succeeding in a career. Often struggles kids have in uncomplicated schoolhouse may atomic number 82 to strengths in adulthood and grades do not make up one's mind success in a kid'south career. Teachers and parents must observe things to praise in a struggling child and always be on a quest to find cached treasure in children.
Genes, family life and stress levels, cultural factors, friends, health, emotions and temperamental factors, educational experience, ecology influences all play a part in the development of neurological constructs. ( electronic experiences, home life, an unsophisticated language in music, sleep deprivation, afterward schoolhouse jobs and extra-curricular activities, drugs and booze).
The book is organized effectually learning about eight systems of the heed or 8 neurodevelopmental constructs and how they work together. These include:
Attention Control System –(the administrative bureau of encephalon
The Retention Organisation- schoolhouse days revenue enhancement this more than nearly careers
Language System- those with skillful language skills oftentimes make it through school with flying colors.
The Spatial Ordering System
Organizing skills, ability to think with pictures,
The Sequential Ordering Organization -often goes with the spatial ordering system. Fourth dimension direction difficulties and reasoning skills.
College Thinking System
Social Thinking Arrangement -able to acquit in an appropriate way with peers.
Each of these systems works together.
This book is valuable for parents and educators, coaches and all who work with youth and it is a beginner grooming for teachers to assistance understand and bargain with differences in learning. All kinds of minds need to be understood and well educated. Notwithstanding, it is not practical in how to acquit these ideas out within a regular classroom! Author Mel Levine advocates close ascertainment and accurate clarification leading to individualized help with the purpose of identifying and celebrating strengths! Students and their families need to know information technology is never as well late to strengthen and meliorate a mind. Students with attention struggles ( also equally their families) demand to be told that there is a reason for their struggles and given the tools to assist strengthen their attention while teachers need to have strong alliances with these children rather than adversarial relationships. 0ften students who struggle with language demand to develop their language skills in a discipline that they are passionate and expert nearly ( cars, fashion, etc). The Minds over Fourth dimension section and Practical Considerations at the conclusion of each chapter were nigh helpful and summarized what to expect for neurologically equally children develop from elementary, center, and loftier school and how to support these developments or lack thereof. Teachers need to exist aware of the different neurological functions to collaborate with parents and schools need to exist places that celebrate children's strengths and allow children to differ. After reading the volume, I researched the writer and sadly found he was defendant of sexually abusing children in his do and soon later committed suicide.

Levine comes with many case examples throughout and these stands as case in points and reflections almost how no matter what we know or study about the brains and neuropsychology, these brains belong to real people, who are living real lives, and who are having real struggles. And as educators or people in help professions or otherwise it is our job to use our knowledge to fit the demand of the person, not the person to endeavor to be fitted to what we know (or think we know). I think his framework is useful for psychologists and other specialists that work with children in a more clinical sense. But as an educator, our master focus is on the delivery of our instruction. We certainly differentiate that education to meet the child where he or she is at. Merely we can't get inside their brain and pinpoint what's going on at a neurodevelopmental level.
